ERIE, Pa. – Syracuse's first Winter Olympian, Stefanie Marty, rejoined her teammates for her first game since competing at the 2010 Winter Games, but the Syracuse University ice hockey team (17-15-1, 8-7-0 CHA) could not overcome No. 1/1 Mercyhurst (26-2-3, 13-1-1 CHA) as it was defeated, 4-1, on Friday evening at Mercyhurst Ice Center.
Despite holding the 2-0 power-play advantage in the opening period, the Lakers were the first to strike when Jess Jones put Mercyhurst on the board with 1:42 remaining in the period.
The Orange picked up three consecutive penalties in the second period and was able to kill off all but one at the 12:26 mark when Bailey Bram added to the Mercyhurst lead, 2-0. Syracuse capitalized on its fifth power-play opportunity of the night when freshman Holly-Carrie Mattimoe scored her ninth goal of the season on a pass from senior defensive pair Brittaney Maschmeyer and Gabrielle Beaudry. The marker ties for fourth on the team, while Maschmeyer's 15th helper puts her in a four-way tie for second.
The Lakers proved, once again, why they are the No. 1 team in the country when Vicki Bendus scored her team-leading 27th goal of the night midway through the third period. The Orange responded by pulling senior goaltender Lucy Schoedel with 1:19 left to play, but MC's Jesse Scanzano made the empty-netter to seal the 4-1 victory.
Schoedel finished with 34 saves, while Mercyhurst's Hillary Pattenden stopped 17.
The Orange will play its final road contest of the season when it concludes its series at Mercyhurst on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 2 p.m.
