SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University ice hockey team (17-14-1, 7-8-0) will conclude its regular season when it travels to top-ranked Mercyhurst (25-2-3, 12-1-1) on Friday, Nov. 26 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 27 at 2 p.m. The Orange needs just one point in its final series to claim the No. 2 seed in the CHA Tournament, which begins Thursday, March 4.
Marty Emerges at 2010 Winter Games
After becoming Syracuse's first Winter Olympian, junior assistant captain Stefanie Marty proved to be an offensive force on her native Swiss National Team in Vancouver. After back-to-back losses against Sweden and Canada, the Nussbaumen, Switzerland native completed a hat trick as the Swiss defeated Slovakia, 5-2, on Feb. 17. She continued her successes by scoring four goals as Switzerland shutout China, 6-0. In the final classification game, Marty scored a goal in regulation and added the decisive shootout goal against Russia to secure Switzerland's fifth-place finish in only its second Olympic appearance. Marty ranks second in goals scored (8) in the 2010 Winter Games women's ice hockey tournament and became just the third woman to score eight or more goals in one Olympics.
Schoedel Among the Best
Senior goaltender Lucy Schoedel received her second consecutive Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award nomination, as announced by USA Hockey on Feb. 17. Schoedel, who was also nominated for the prestigious award in 2009, is one of 45 players being considered. The Ithaca, N.Y. native, who was SU's first student-athlete to sign with the Orange in its inaugural season, has played in every game in team history. Since transferring from University of New Hampshire, she has posted a 2.62 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage for Syracuse. She has recorded six shutouts, including three this season, and helped the team to a No. 1 ranking in the USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls for the first time in program history. The NCAA Division I women's ice hockey coaches will select the top-10 finalists on March 2.
Last Time Out
The Orange hosted Robert Morris when it closed out its home schedule on February 12 and 13. Senior goaltender Lucy Schoedel made 30 saves defending a hot-shooting offensive attack when SU lost to RMU, 1-0, on Friday night. The Orange rebounded on Saturday night when three players celebrated Senior Night as Syracuse defeated the Colonials, 3-2. Syracuse came back from a 2-0 deficit in the third period to score three unanswered goal to secure the victory. Senior blueliner Gabrielle Beaudry led the Orange with assists on all three goals, which resulted in her first career CHA Defensive Player of the Week award.
Syracuse-Mercyhurst Series
The Orange has never beaten the Mercyhurst Lakers, as the CHA foe owns the 6-0 series record. In its last meeting, Syracuse rallied from a 4-1 deficit at the start of the third period by scoring two unanswered goals to bring the Orange within one in the final minutes, but it was not enough to overcome the top-ranked Lakers. Sophomore Megan Skelly has a team-best four goals against MC, including one marker in SU's first three meetings with the Lakers. Goaltender Lucy Schoedel recorded a career-high 46 saves in a 7-1 loss to MC on Nov. 15, 2008.
Scouting the Lakers
The top-ranked Mercyhurst Lakers broke the NCAA record for short-handed goals in a season as it defeated Wayne State, 4-1, on Feb. 20. Junior Jesse Scanzano put the Lakers in the record books when she scored MC's 20th short-handed goal. Mercyhurst is 25-2-3 with its only losses coming from Minnesota-Duluth and Niagara. They have skated to draws against Minnesota-Duluth, Niagara and Clarkson. Three of its players top the NCAA list for points per game, including Scanzano (2.0), Vicki Bendus (1.9) and Bailey Bram (1.74).
