PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Syracuse junior goalkeeper Liz Hogan has been selected as the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year in a vote by the league's head coaches. The Orange received three first-place votes in the preseason poll and was picked to finish second.
Hogan has led the BIG EAST in goals-against average (GAA) the past two seasons. In 2009, Hogan recorded a 9.58 GAA and held opponents to less than 10 goals in nine games. She reached double figures in saves in six contests, including SU's NCAA quarterfinal game against No. 2 Maryland. In addition, Hogan led the team with 41 ground balls.
Syracuse tallied 57 points in the poll, two points behind preseason favorite Georgetown. The Hoyas received four first-place votes as coaches could not vote for their own teams and earned 59 points. Notre Dame earned the remaining two first-place votes and was picked third with 54 points. Loyola was picked fourth with 43 points, while Louisville came in fifth with 34 points. Rutgers was sixth with 32 points, followed by Connecticut (21 points), Cincinnati (16 points) and BIG EAST newcomer Villanova (8).
Four members of the Orange were named to the preseason all-conference team. Joining Hogan are seniors Christina Dove, Halley Quillinan and Lindsay Rogers. Hogan and Dove were unanimous selections. The four all-conference preseason picks are the most for any school in the league.
The Orange opens the season on Friday, Feb. 19 against Colgate at 4 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
