SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse tennis team returned from their road swing this weekend with two more wins and an undefeated 5-0 record in the BIG EAST. The Orange visited Providence on Saturday afternoon and defeated the Friars, 7-0, and then traveled to Connecticut on Sunday afternoon to defeat the Huskies, 5-2.
Saturday's match against Providence featured dominating play across the board for Syracuse, with the Orange winning every single match in both singles and doubles play. Freshman CC Sardinha handily beat her Providence foe, Marisela Aviles, at the No. 1 spot in singles with scores of 6-1 and 6-0. Sophomore Emily Harman found similar success at the No. 2 spot, winning her sets against Ayushi Sinha, 6-1, 6-1. Junior Christina Tan also turned in an impressive performance, going undefeated in her two sets against Jen Cusak.
Harman teamed up with Sardinha to defeat the Friars' duo of Aviles and Sinha in the No. 1 doubles spot with a final score of 8-4. The pairing of Tan and sophomore Alessondra Parra went undefeated in their matchup with Providence's Melissa Ferry and Brittany Maddock with a score of 8-0.
The Orange had a tougher day against the Huskies on Sunday, winning four of their six singles matches, but still sweeping the doubles competition.
Sardinha and Harman continued to dominate the top two positions in singles action against their Providence opponents. Sardinha beat Kelley LoRusso, 6-1, 6-2, while Harman beat Alli Campitiello in two sets with scores of 6-2 and 6-2.
Junior Simone Kalhorn had a convincing victory against Connecticut's Alexa Gregory, going 6-0 and 6-4 in their two sets at the No. 4 spot. At the No. 3 spot, Parra outlasted Emily Herb in their first set, 7-5, before shutting her out in the second, 6-0 to secure her singles victory.
Harman and Sardinha paired up again to defeat Connecticut's duo of Moritz and LoRusso, 8-3 at the No. 1 doubles spot. Senior Chelsea Jones teamed up with Kalhorn to take down the Huskie pairing of Campitiello and McKeon at the No. 2 spot, 8-4. Parra and Tan were the Orange's duo at the No. 3 doubles position and had no trouble with Connecticut's pairing of Herb and Gregory, beating them 8-2 in their match.
Syracuse is now 15-2 in the regular season, just one victory shy of surpassing last year's 16 victories. The squad is undefeated in the BIG EAST at 5-0, and has out-scored their conference opponents an impressive 32-3 in their BIG EAST matchups. This weekend's victories also push Syracuse's win streak to nine matches.
The Orange return home briefly for a rescheduled matchup against Army on Wednesday, March 21st before heading back out on the road to take on two more conference opponents, Georgetown on April 2nd and Seton Hall on April 3rd. Wednesday's match against Army starts at 12:00 p.m. and will take place at the Drumlins Tennis Center. Check SUAthletics.com for coverage of the Orange's upcoming matches.
