Orange Wins 10th Straight

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse tennis team extended its win streak to 10-straight matches on Wednesday afternoon by defeating Army, 6-1, at the Drumlins Tennis Center. The victory pushes Syracuse to 16 wins for the season, tying a school record for wins in a season. The feat has been accomplished three other times, in 1992-93, 1999-00, and 2008-09.
Freshman CC Sardinha had another dominating day at the No. 1 singles spot, taking down Army's Anne Houghton in sets of 6-0 and 6-1. Sophomore Emily Harman had a tougher time at the number No. 2 spot against Army's Jessica Ahn. Ahn won the first set, 6-1, with Harman winning the second 7-6 after a 10-4 tiebreaker. Senior Eleanor Peters handled Army's Kristin Beehler easily, beating her in two sets with scores of 6-1 and 6-1.
Sophomore Alessondra Parra and junior Christina Tan also picked up victories at the No. 4 and No. 6 positions, respectively. The Orange's only loss of the day in singles came at the No. 5 spot, where Simone Kalhorn fell to Army's Michael Tollerton.
Doubles action featured very one-sided play with the Orange winning every match. The No. 1 pairing of Harman and Sardinha defeated Houghton and Beehler, 8-5. The other doubles matches also ended with 8-5 decisions with Parra and Peters beating Colton and Hang at the No. 2 spot and Chelsea Jones and Kalhorn took down Tollerton and Verano at the No. 3 spot.
At 16-2, the Syracuse team is poised to have its most successful year in program history. With three matches remaining, the Orange will put its winning streak on the line against two more BIG EAST foes and then a concluding match at home against Temple. The team is 5-0 against BIG EAST teams so far this season and owns a perfect 8-0 record at home.
Syracuse will take the court Friday, April 2nd against conference rival Georgetown before traveling up to Seton Hall for a match on Saturday, March 3rd. Check SUAthletics.com for results from the upcoming matches.
