SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore pitcher Jenna Caira led the Orange to a decisive 11-1 game one victory against the Providence Friars on Saturday, April 10 at the Syracuse Softball Stadium. With the 1-1 draw on the day, the Orange improves to 18-16, while the Friars move to 12-17 for the year.
Through her four innings pitched, Caira allowed just three hits and one run. The pitcher helped herself offensively by knocking in SU's first run of the game in the bottom of the first when she singled to third.
Freshman Stacy Kuwik (2 hits, 1 bb) supplied the Orange with five RBIs, helping the team expand its early lead and eventually seal its five-inning, mercy rule victory. Catcher Lacey Kohl and left fielder Rachel Helman added two RBIs each.
In the second game of the afternoon doubleheader, sophomore Stephanie Watts nailed a blazing homerun to right, bringing the Orange back within one after a fired up Friars' offense grabbed three runs in the top of the first.
While Syracuse chipped away at the Friars' lead throughout the game, scoring one run per inning on four different occasions, Providence was able to secure four runs between the third and fourth innings, giving the team the lead it needed to snag the win, 7-6.
Brittany Gardner, who had a strong finish in the first game, started game two and took the loss, giving up five of the Friars' seven runs. Caira returned to the mound to close the second contest for the Orange, shutting down Providence in the final two innings of play.
The Orange and the Friars will be back in action on Sunday at 12 p.m. competing to see who will take home the series' win.
