Orange Takes Series 2-1 from Friars

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore catcher Lacey Kohl had three RBIs to lead the Orange to a 10-2 mercy rule victory over the Providence Friars on Sunday, April 11 at the Syracuse Softball Stadium. By taking the series 2-1 from the Friars, the Orange improves to 19-16 on the season and 5-3 in the BIG EAST Conference. Meanwhile, the Friars drop to 12-18 overall and 3-5 in the conference.
Kohl, who had two hits in three at bats, gave Syracuse its first run of the game when she singled with a shot up the middle to score teammate Stephanie Watts (1 hit, 1 walk, 3 RBIs) from second. Freshman Stacey Kuwik, who finished the series with seven RBIs, knocked in Hallie Gibbs with a single to center to give the Orange an early 2-0 lead.
The Friars fought back and tied the game at two in the third, but Syracuse answered with a five run rally in the bottom of the fourth. Sophomore Kelly Saco sent a shot to left field for a double, putting Kuwik in position to get hit home by Rachel Helman. Veronica Grant and Watts each had one RBI in the inning, while Kohl had two, breaking open the score to 7-2.
Syracuse shut down the Friars once again in the top of the fifth and came up with a two out, three run rally in the bottom of the inning to take the game, 10-2. Watts singled to drive home Grant and Morgan Nandin. Gibbs followed with a single of her own, scoring Watts to end the game.
The Orange will travel to Ithaca, N.Y. for a doubleheader against Cornell on Wednesday, April 14 at 3:00 p.m.
