HANOVER, N.H. – The No. 10 Syracuse men's rowing team travels to Hanover, N.H. on Sunday, May 23 for its final cup race of the season. The Orange will go toe-to-toe with No. 7 Dartmouth for the Packard Cup. The Syracuse varsity eight has won 15 of its last 17 cup contests dating back to 2006 including four consecutive Packard Cups. SU is also 28-4 in dual races since 2006.
The SU and Dartmouth varsity eight met last weekend at the Eastern Sprints. The Big Green upset the Orange buy just two seconds in the preliminary heat. Syracuse went on to finish second in the petite final, while Dartmouth raced to a fifth-place finish in the grand final.
The SU second varsity eight also placed second in the petite final at the Eastern Sprints. The Orange freshman eight finished third in the petite final and the Syracuse varsity four posted the best time of the day.
The Big Green's second varsity eight placed fourth in the petite final; six seconds behind SU Dartmouth's freshman eight took second place in the third level final. The Big Green third varsity eight took fifth in its race.
The Packard Cup was commissioned by Anthony Ladd in 1959 to honor his father-in-law, Edward Packard. Edward Packard was the stroke of the 1904 varsity eight, the first crew to capture an IRA Championship. Syracuse won the first seven Packard Cup races and has won each of the last four years. The Orange has won the cup 25 times overall.
Following the Packard Cup, the Orange begins preparation for the 2010 IRA Regatta. Syracuse has four boats that have qualified, including the varsity eight, second varsity eight, freshmen eight and varsity four. The regatta takes place June 3-5 on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J.
