HANOVER, N.H. – The No. 10 Syracuse men's rowing team lost only its third cup contest dating back to 2006 today as the No. 7 Dartmouth varsity eight crossed the finish line 3.2 seconds faster than SU. It was the second time in two weeks the Big Green bested the Orange. Dartmouth defeated Syracuse by two seconds at the Eastern Sprints on May 16. SU is now 28-5 in dual races since 2006.
With the win, the Big Green took home the Packard Cup for the first time since 2005. Syracuse had won four consecutive Packard Cups. Dartmouth finished in 5:31.3. The Orange posted a time of 5:34.5.
The Packard Cup was commissioned by Anthony Ladd in 1959 to honor his father-in-law, Edward Packard. Edward Packard was the stroke of the 1904 varsity eight, the first crew to capture an IRA Championship.
SU took home the other three races. The Syracuse second varsity eight recorded a time of 5:40.2. The Big Green finished in 5:50.7. The Orange varsity four registered a time of 6:24.9. Dartmouth crossed the finish line in 6:48.6. SU's freshman eight posted a time of 5:47.0. Dartmouth ended in 5:54.6.
The Orange begins preparation for the 2010 IRA Regatta. Syracuse has four boats that have qualified, including the varsity eight, second varsity eight, freshmen eight and varsity four. The regatta takes place June 3-5 on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J.
