CAMDEN, N.J. – The Syracuse University men's varsity eight crew advanced to the grand final during the second day of competition at the 108th IRA Regatta, on the Cooper River in Camden County, N.J. The second varsity eight and varsity four will compete in the petite final and the freshmen eight will race in the third level final.
The Orange varsity eight moved into the grand final by virtue of its third-place showing in today's semifinal. SU finished with a time of 5:40.111, just .02 seconds faster than Boston. Washington won the race and California finished second with times of 5:32.362 and 5:33.617, respectively. Only the top three crews advanced to the grand final.
“We pulled the trigger at the right time. Sometime those photo finishes come down to luck and it felt really good to be on the right-side of the line,” head coach Dave Reischman said. “We were in sixth place early, but our guys kept their composure and made the right move with about 500 meters remaining.”
The 10th-ranked Syracuse Orange will battle No. 1 Washington, No. 2 California, No. 3 Harvard, No. 5 Brown and No. 8 Cornell for the national championship tomorrow at 12:15 p.m.
The 10th-ranked Orange second varsity eight finished fourth in its semifinal with a time of 5:57.016. Washington also won that race in 5:45.823. SU will compete in the petite final against No. 7 Princeton, No. 8 Northeastern, No. 9 Yale, No. 11 Boston and No. 13 Columbia at 10:30 a.m.
“The junior varsity gave it everything they had and fell just five seconds short of making the grand final,” said Reischman. “I look forward to seeing them race tomorrow.”
The varsity four placed fifth in its semifinal with a time of 6:45.086. Wisconsin won the race in 6:28.966. The Orange will battle Pennsylvania, George Washington, Temple, Yale and Princeton in tomorrow's petite final at 9:24 a.m.
SU's 11th-ranked freshmen eight boat will compete in the third level final tomorrow against No. 14 Pennsylvania, No. 15 Yale, No. 16 Northeastern and No. 17 Dartmouth at 8:12 a.m.
