SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse University head men's rowing coach Dave Reischman announced that Shawn Bagnall will join the Orange staff as the freshman coach and recruiting coordinator. Bagnall joins the Orange staff after a seven-year stint at Gonzaga as the freshman/novice and junior varsity coach as well as recruiting coordinator for men's rowing. While at Gonzaga, he helped recruit talent from across the country, while producing exponentially higher recruitment rates.
“I have been fortunate in that I have been able to watch Shawn most of his career and I have been impressed with the quality of crews at the level he has coached,” Reischman said. “Gonzaga has had some great recruiting classes and great crews at the freshman and novice level during the past five years and Shawn deserves a lot of credit for that. The opportunity became available and it was a no brainer. Shawn is an extraordinary addition to Syracuse.”
Bagnall led the Bulldogs freshman/novice 4+ to a Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) championship in 2010. He also led the freshman 8+ to a 15th-place finish at the 2009 IRA and a 13th-place showing at the 2008 IRA.
In 2006, he produced the first Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Regatta invitation for Gonzaga in the freshman 8+, earning a 16th-place finish. He guided the freshman/novice 8+ to three second-place finishes (2006, 2008 & 2009) and a third-place finish (2010) at the WIRA championships. Bagnall helped one rower from his junior varsity boat earn second-team All-WIRA honors in 2005.
“First and foremost I am excited to be part of the tradition and history that is Syracuse rowing. Coach Reischman has been able to build a very successful program at Syracuse and to be part of its future is an opportunity I had to take.” Bagnall said. “I am eager to get started and I look forward to the 2010-11 season and beyond.”
During the summer of 2007, Bagnall served as the assistant coach for the US Rowing Junior National Team Development and Selection Camp in Seattle, Wash. He helped develop athletes for competition at the United States Club Nationals and selected the 4- who finished 14th at the Junior World Championships in Beijing, China.
In the following summer of 2008, Bagnall coached and was assistant camp director for St. Joseph's Preparatory Hawk Rowing in Philadelphia, Pa.
Prior to Gonzaga, Bagnall was the head men's rowing coach at Washington State University. At the helm of the Cougars, he helped improve the competition level and athlete retention rates for the club sport program.

Bagnall, a 1999 graduate of Washington State, enjoyed a successful career as a varsity rower from 1996-99. As team captain he was an All-Pacific-10 Conference selection in 1998.
