KENT, Ohio - Syracuse (16-0) continues to make program history in 2010, capturing its fourth tournament title of the season in the Kent State/Mizuno Open on Saturday night. The Orange defeated Duquesne, 3-0, and took a thrilling five-set victory at Kent State, 3-2, to claim the tournament crown. It marks the first time in SU volleyball history the squad has won all of its regular season tournaments, while the 16-0 overall record is a program-best season start.
Junior outside hitter Noemie Lefebvre and senior right side hitter Mindy Stanislovaitis garnered Kent State/Mizuno Open All-Tournament team honors. It marks the fourth all-tournament team honor of the season for Lefebvre and the second for Stanislovaitis.
Syracuse 3, Duquesne 0
Syracuse completed its 10th-straight sweep of the season, downing the Dukes in three sets while outscoring them, 75-37. A sound Orange defense and serve receive held Duquesne to a .020 hitting percentage, the lowest by an SU opponent this season, while using a 39-25 advantage in kills to dismantle the Dukes.
Lefebvre led the Orange with 13 kills while freshman middle blocker Lindsay McCabe matched six kills with four total blocks and a .462 attack percentage. Senior outside hitter Hayley Todd added eight kills and three total blocks while Stanislovaitis notched seven kills. Sophomore setter Laura Homann dished out 33 assists while contributing eight digs through the three sets.
Defensively, junior libero Ashley Williams set the pace with 13 digs while Lefebvre chipped in eight and sophomore middle blocker Samantha Hinz had five.
Syracuse 3, Kent State 2
In its closest match of the season, Syracuse used a 6-3 run to claim a 15-10 victory in the deciding set and capture the Kent State/Mizuno Open title. The Orange exploded both offensively and defensively, holding a 77-64 advantage in kills and a 94-87 edge in digs. Homann set a career-high in the five-set thriller with 65 sets contributing to SU's 71-59 advantage in assists. The St. Charles, Ill. native also chipped in 11 digs for a double-double.
Lefebvre registered her 39th career double-double in the match, pairing a match-best 21 kills with 21 digs while Todd was a close second with 20 kills. McCabe added a career-best 15 kills and a pair of total blocks while Stanislovaitis rounded out the double-digit kill leaders with 13.
Defensively, Williams had a career day, tallying 29 digs while senior defensive specialist Sarah Hayes added 13 back row pick-ups.
The Orange takes the week off from matches before hitting the road again to open BIG EAST play. Syracuse will visit Georgetown on Friday, September 24 at 7 p.m. before meeting South Florida on Sunday, September 26.
