SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Syracuse used an early 3-0 lead to ward off Robert Morris, 5-2, in game-one of a College Hockey America (CHA) series on Friday. The Orange improved to 9-11-3 overall and 3-2 in CHA action, while RMU drops to 4-15-3 and 1-4-1 in CHA play.
Senior captain Stefanie Marty tallied the first score of the night on an SU power play at the 9:30 mark. Syracuse outshot Robert Morris 10-4 in the opening period and led 1-0 at the first intermission.
Just 2:54 into the second stanza, sophomore Kelsey Welch increased SU's lead to two and less than two minutes later the Orange struck again on man-up opportunity. Junior defender Kelly Dimmen fired a hard shot from the top past RMU goaltender Meeri Raisanen, which proved to be the game-winning score.
The Colonials found the back of the net at the 10:56 mark of the second period and the Orange held a 3-1 advantage heading into the break.
Syracuse came out of the locker room strong and quickly advanced its lead and put the game out of reach for RMU. Senior Julie Rising delivered the puck to rookie Margot Scharfe who one-timed the puck into the net at the 2:51 mark. Just 32 seconds later, junior Lisa Mullan took the puck the length of the ice and wrapped around the goal finding a wide open Ashley Cockell for the score.
Robert Morris took advantage of a 5-3 man-up opportunity and made it 5-2 with just over six minutes to remaining in regulation but that's as close as the Colonials would come.
Marty and Welch each finished with a goal and an assist for Syracuse. Junior defender Taylor Metcalfe dished out the assists on SU's first two goals. Freshman goaltender Kallie Billadeau made 21 stops between the pipes in the win.
Syracuse outshot Robert Morris 29-23 and held a 40-25 advantage in the faceoff circle.
The Orange will face RMU again tomorrow, Jan. 15 at 2 p.m. at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
