NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. – The Syracuse University women's ice hockey team (10-13-2, 4-4) was bested by College Hockey America (CHA) foe Niagara (8-12-4, 5-2-1), 3-1, on Saturday at Dwyer Arena.
Niagara outshot the Orange 8-5 in the first period, but neither team could find the back of the net. The Purple Eagles' Jacqueline Spring tallied the first score of the afternoon just 2:46 into the second stanza. Niagara extended its lead to two on a power-play less than two minutes later and led 2-0 heading into intermission.
Syracuse narrowed the gap in the third period with a goal by freshman Sadie St. Germain. Sophomore Jessica Sorensen assisted on the score.
The Orange had four man-up opportunities in the third period but could not take advantage of them. With less than seven minutes remaining in regulation, a shot from freshman Christina LaCombe hit the pipe and sailed wide. Niagara put the game out of reach for SU with its second power-play goal with 3:21 to play.
Niagara held a 29-15 advantage in shots, while the Orange edged the Purple Eagles 30-26 in the faceoff circle.
Syracuse will remain on the road and face CHA opponent Wayne State in a two game series on Jan. 28 and 29.
