BOSTON – The Orange men's rowing team began its fall season at the storied Head of the Charles Regatta on Sunday, Oct. 23. Syracuse placed 18th out of 34 crews in the men's championship eights race, crossing the finish line in a time of 15:03.27.
The SU boat was coxed by senior Isaac Budmen and featured classmates Aidan Barrett, Chris Bickford, Mike Dietrick, Chris Lutz, juniors Brendan Murphy, Mason Leasure and sophomores Jake Martens and Mac Zinc.
“I thought we executed well,” head coach Dave Reischman said of the team's performance. “We rowed with the kind of rhythm we expected to. We need to work to on our fitness, but this is where the crew is right now. The guys know they have to take advantage of every opportunity to get faster and they are up for that challenge.”
Harvard took advantage of the Charles River's near-perfect weather conditions to clock a winning time of 14:17.68 in the three-mile race. USRowing's crew (14:23.31) was second and the University of Washington (14:26.18) finished third.
Established in 1965 by members of the Cambridge Boat Club, the Head of the Charles is the largest two-day regatta in the world. This year's event attracted more than 8,000 athletes from around the globe and featured more than 50 different races.
Syracuse returns to the water on Sunday, Oct. 30 when it heads to Lake Carnegie for the 2011 Princeton Chase.
