Jessica Sorensen scored two goals and Kallie Billadeau made 17 saves to lead Syracuse (4-6-0) past UConn on Friday night at Tennity Ice Pavilion, 4-0. The Orange scored two goals in the first and added two more in the third period to secure the win. The teams will complete the two-game series tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
The Orange doubled up the Huskies in shots for the game, 34-17, including a 17-8 edge in the third period. After jumping up to a large advantage in faceoffs early in the game, the Huskies narrowed the gap to 31-26 on the night.
SU got the scoring started early as Sorensen notched her second of the season just 3:49 into the game when she collected a chip from Julie Knerr, skated into the UConn zone and deeked past Connecticut goaltender Nicole Paniccia. Billadeau was also credited with an assist, her second career helper.
Eight minutes later, Syracuse extended its lead to 2-0 as Jordyn Burns scored her first collegiate goal on an individual effort. Burns scooped up the puck in the neutral zone and sped in towards Pannccia before blasting a shot that deflected off the goaltender's shoulder and into the back of the net.
The score stayed that way until midway through the third period when Margot Scharfe cleaned up a mess in front of the UConn net as she followed her initial shot and sent a backhand into the goal. Sorensen added her second of the night on a power play tally with 4:25 to go with a redirection from in front atop the crease on a hard pass from Allie LaCombe.
