SU Wraps Up Home Stand With Connecticut

Following a come-from-behind victory against Union to earn a split in the weekend series, the Syracuse ice hockey team (3-6-0) will conclude its five-game homestand against UConn this weekend, beginning Friday at 7:00 p.m.
The Orange snapped a four-game losing streak on Saturday with its 5-3 win against the Dutchwomen. It was the most goals the Orange have scored this season and most since January 14 of last season against Robert Morris.
Storylines Vs. Connecticut
Syracuse and Connecticut have met once in each of the past two seasons with the all-time series tied 1-1-0. The Orange picked up a 7-1 win last year against the Huskies. In last season's meeting, 12 different Orange recorded points as SU coasted to a 7-1 win at Tennity, and carried a 5-0 lead into the second intermission.
The Huskies are off to a 1-5-2 start to the season, and are 0-1-1 on the road. UConn snapped a three-game losing streak on Saturday with a 3-0 win against Maine to earn a split in the beginning of Hockey East play. SU is 5-4-2 all-time against Hockey East foes.
17 different skaters have tallied points this season for the Huskies, led by senior defenseman Sami Evelyn with two goals and four assists. Evelyn had a three-point weekend against Maine last weekend and has one power play and one game-winning goal this season. Freshman defenseman Caitlin Hewes trails closely behind Evelyn with two goals and three assists early in the season, while four other Huskies have registered four points.
Through the first eight games of the season, Nicole Paniccia and Alexandra Garcia have split time in goal. Paniccia has earned starts in most of the games thus far, posting a 1-4-0 record with a 2.35 goals against average and .927 save percentage, which ranks eighth in the nation.
Up Next: No. 3 Cornell
Upon completing its five-game homestand this weekend against Connecticut, the Orange will head back on the road to No. 3 Cornell on Tuesday. With the all-time series tied at 1-1-0, the Big Red is currently ranked third in the nation in both the USCHO.com Poll and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll.
Five-Goal Outburst
Syracuse scored five unanswered goals in the final 20 minutes against Union last Saturday, the highest goal total in the third period for the Orange in program history. SU goals came from five different skaters, including Christina LaCombe and Caitlin Roach's first collegiate tallies.
The most goals ever scored in any period by the Orange came against Sacred Heart on October 31, 2008 when SU scored seven first period goals en route to a 10-0 win.
First-Timers
In Syracuse two-game set against Union last weekend, the Orange saw three different skaters score their first collegiate goals. On Friday against the Dutchwomen, Allie LaCombe potted her first career tally, her first of two on the night. LaCombe's cousin, Christina, along with Caitlin Roach, scored their first collegiate goals on Saturday. Six different Orange skaters have scored their first career goals this season, including four freshmen and two sophomores.
Allie LaCombe first goal came in the second period on Friday that gave the Orange a 2-0 lead at the time. After Union fought back and took a 3-2 lead late in the third period, LaCombe added her second of the night with five seconds left in overtime to force overtime.
SU faced a 3-0 deficit entering the third period on Saturday only to see the Orange fire back with five third period goals. Christina LaCombe scored her first collegiate goal with 2:39 left in the third on the power play to tie the game at three before Roach buried the game-winner with 49 seconds left.
Freshmen Setting The Pace
Syracuse has seven freshmen on its roster for the 2011-12 season, and the new members of the Orange are already making an impact on the scoresheet.
Allie LaCombe (three goals, two assists) and Casey Hirsch (two goals, three assists) are tied for the team-lead in points with Holly Carrie-Mattimoe and Megan Skelly. The Orange freshmen have accounted for eight goals and 16 assists this season, which is 44.4% of Syracuse's total scoring.
