SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University volleyball team (18-11, 7-6) took a giant step forward in qualifying for the conference tournament with 3-0 sweep (25-21, 25-18, 26-24) of DePaul (7-21, 3-10) on Friday night at the Women's Building.
The Orange had five players with at least seven kills, led by Lindsay McCabe with 11 spikes on 21 attempts. Freshman setter Emily Betteridge recorded a career-high 39 assists.
The first set was closely contested with neither team gaining more than a two point advantage until the frame was tied at 17. At that point, the Orange used a 4-1 run thanks in part to kills by McCabe and Sam Hinz, along with a service ace from Betteridge and a DePaul attacking error. SU closed out the set with a 25-21 victory. Hinz connected on all four of her attacks in the opening stanza.
The second set was full of runs as SU jumped out to a 7-1 advantage which was answered by a 5-0 spurt by DePaul. The Orange however, would have four different players tally kills during a 10-4 run which gave SU control of the frame at 17-10. The Orange took a 25-18 decision and went into the break up 2-0.
SU squandered four match-point opportunities in the third set, but with the match tied at 24, a kill from Hinz followed by a kill from McCabe wrapped up the three set sweep.
Hinz hit a team-high .429 and tied the school record for block assists in a single-season with 136. McCabe's 11 kills and six blocks were both match-highs.
"This was an important win against a hard working DePaul team," interim head coach Kelly Morrisroe said. "We are ready to get back in the gym tomorrow to tune up our offensive and defensive systems. We have to play better as a unit against Notre Dame."
The Orange hosts Notre Dame on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. A win would clinch a berth into the conference tournament next week in Milwaukee. Prior to the match with the Fighting Irish, the three Syracuse seniors (Noemie Lefebvre, Erin Little and Ashley Williams) will be honored as they play their final home match as members of the Orange. Orange All Access will carry a live stream of the match.
