COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- After tying the game with 7:20 remaining in regulation, the Syracuse field hockey was eliminated by Maryland in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament in overtime, 2-1. Kelsey Millman scored the lone goal for the Orange, which ends its season with a 19-4 record.
“It was a really hard fought game, and it's a shame that Syracuse came out on the short end of the stick," head coach Ange Bradley said. "I am proud of my kids, and I would like to thank our seniors for leading us to this level of play. I appreciate everything they have done for Syracuse.”
The overtime tally came with 1:34 left in the extra session on a penalty corner goal from Harriet Tribble to send the Terrapins into the Final Four. SU goalkeeper Leann Stiver made three saves in the game.
Following a scoreless opening 35 minutes of play, Maryland netted the first goal of the game as Katie Gerzabek took a cross feed from Janessa Pope and buried a shot into the right corner past Stiver.
Syracuse, which was outshot 11-5 in the game, pressured the Maryland defense looking for the equalizer, and Millman potted her 19th of the season late in the half. After Heather Susek's initial shot resulted in a loose ball in the circle, Millman showed patience with the rebound before tucking it past Terrapin goalkeeper Meliisa Vassalotti.
The Orange was forced to play down a player for 10 minutes during the game as SU was assessed two yellow cards. Syracuse was also issued two green cards in the contest while Maryland was whistled for a green and a five-minute yellow.
Maryland held the edge in the overtime period with a 3-1 edge in shots, and netted the game-winner on its second penalty corner of OT as Tribble received the insertion pass from Gerzabek and fired a shot through traffic and past Stiver.
