SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Reserves Baye Keita and James Southerland each had career scoring nights to help #5/5 Syracuse (3-0) advance to the semifinals of the Dicks Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off with a 98-74 victory against Albany (1-2) on Tuesday night at the Carrier Dome.
Keita had 14 points and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the floor. He grabbed all five of his rebounds on the offensive glass. Southerland had 19 points on 8-12 shooting, 14 of which came in the first half.
The Orange out-rebounded the Great Danes 47-29 on the evening and outscored Albany 60-20 in the paint. The SU bench had 49 points to Albany's 11.
Kris Joseph scored in double-digits for the third straight game as he shared a team-high 19 points with Southerland.
With the game knotted at 16 apiece, consecutive field goals from Fab Melo ignited a 9-0 Syracuse run, giving the Orange a 25-16 advantage. From there, SU extended its largest lead of the half to 17 at 49-32 with 1:38 remaining. The Orange led 51-34 at halftime.
SU opened the second half with an 11-3 spurt, highlighted by an alley-oop from Scoop Jardine to Brandon Triche, and pushed its lead to 25 at the under-16-minute timeout. Albany's Gerardo Suero tried to keep the Great Danes close and had a game-high 31 points, but the Syracuse's depth was too much as 10 Orange players scored at least four points each.
Jardine, Triche and Dion Waiters all had five assists, while #C.J. Fair# matched his career-high with nine rebounds to lead SU in that category.
In its three games to open the season, the Orange has outscored its opponents by 28.3 points and is averaging 89.3 points per game.
Suero of Albany is the first player to score over 30 points in the Carrier Dome since Tywain McKee of Coppin State had 31 points against the Orange on December 22, 2008. Suero averaged 30.0 points in the Great Dane's two NIT games at the Carrier Dome.
Syracuse plays Colgate on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.The NIT Season Tip-off continues next Wednesday with the semifinals at Madison Square Garden. The Orange will square off with Virginia Tech at 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 24 (ESPN2). Oklahoma State will play the winner of Stanford and Colorado State in the evening's first semifinal contest at 7:00 p.m.
