SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Behind a 53 point first half, its highest in any half this season, the Syracuse women's basketball team (10-4)coasted to an 81-30 win against Niagara (3-9) on Thursday night at the Carrier Dome. SU had nine players in the scoring column (three in double-figures), led by Kayla Alexander's 20 points. She also posted 12 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season.
Thursday's 51-point victory is the largest margin of victory for the Orange since an 81-17 win against Delaware State last season. The Orange shot 25-of-58 from the floor for the game in its 47th consecutive non-conference home victory, dating back to the 2006-07 season. SU was also 28-of-36 from the free throw line, including ten from Iasia Hemingway (16 points), tying a career high.
Carmen Tyson-Thomas added 15 points for the Orange, and tied a career-high with 13 rebounds en route to her 12th career double-double, and third this season. Meghan McGuinness led all Niagara scorers with seven points off the bench.
The SU defense limited Niagara to a 20% performance (12-of-59), while the Orange turned 23 Purple Eagle turnovers into 34 points and committed a season-low seven fouls.
After Niagara took a 3-2 lead off a three-pointer from Val McQuade, Syracuse responded with a 16-0 run, including seven straight points from Elashier Hall, to take a commanding 18-3 advantage.
The Orange would pad its lead to 31 with less than six minutes left in the half, capped by a runner in the lane from Shanee Williams to make it 43-12. In the process, SU held Niagara without a field goal for more than four minutes (0-of-8) during the span.
SU would continue to dictate the play in the second half, starting on a 12-4 run and never looked back. Alexander poured in ten second half points and added five rebounds in the final 20 minutes.
Syracuse will be back in action on Saturday for a New Year's Eve matinee with Colgate at 12:00 p.m. from the Dome.
