LAIE, HAWAII – NR/RV Syracuse closed out its four-game road swing with a 83-59 setback against Brigham Young at the Hukilau Invitational in Laie, Hawaii on Saturday, Dec. 2. The Orange goes to 6-2 on the year, while the Cougars improve to 7-2.
Junior Kayla Alexander led all scorers in the game with 26 points. She also grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Kim Parker was one of four Brigham Young players to reach double figures in scoring, leading the way with 22 points.
Syracuse led early, but Brigham Young quickly erased the deficit. Trailing 4-3, the Cougars went on 18-2 scoring run to take a 21-6 lead with 14:11 to play in the first half. BYU continued to increase its advantage and Kristen Riley's basket with 3:34 remaining gave the Cougars their largest lead of the half at 45-17. Alexander, who led the Orange with 10 first-half points, scored on a move in the lane, sparking Syracuse on an 8-0 scoring run to the end the half. Alexander had six points during the run, and Carmen Tyson-Thomas' offensive rebound and layup with 20 seconds to play cut Brigham Young's lead to 45-25 at intermission. The Cougars were 19-of-33 (.576) from the field in the first half, including 5-for-15 from three-point range, while the Orange was 9-for-28 (.321).
The squads traded baskets to start the second half before Brigham Young went on an 18-3 scoring run to seal the victory. Alexander scored 16 points after intermission, but it wasn't enough as the Cougars handed the Orange its second consecutive loss.
Syracuse returns to the Carrier Dome to open BIG EAST play against West Virginia on Wednesday, Dec. 7. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
