The Syracuse ice hockey team begins College Hockey America play this weekend as the Orange travel to Moon Township, Pa. to battle Robert Morris for a two-game set, beginning Friday at 3:00 p.m. The teams will meet again on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The Colonials will make the return trip to Syracuse on February 3-4. SU is coming off a two-game sweep of Lindenwood last weekend at Tennity Ice Pavilion with 6-2 and 2-1 (OT) victories.
Storylines Vs. The Colonials
The Colonials, who were off last weekend, come into this weekend with a 10-2-1 record. Robert Morris last played in the Nutmeg Classic, where it defeated Yale 1-0 before dropping a 3-2 decision to Quinnipiac. Robert Morris is led by freshman forward Rebecca Vint, who has 13 goals and 10 assists through 13 games this season. She is 14th in the nation with 1.77 points per game, and tied for eighth in the country at 1.00 goals per game.
Sophomore Thea Imbrigno leads the Colonials with 11 assists while adding six goals. Kristen DiCiocco has seen a majority of the time between the pipes for Robert Morris with a 8-2-1 record along with a 1.71 goals against average and .927 save percentage.
Up Next: Colgate
Following a three-week layoff for final exams and the holiday break, the Orange will return to the ice against Colgate on Jan. 2 in Hamilton at 7:00 p.m. The Raiders defeated SU 3-1 earlier this season at Tennity Ice Pavilion on Oct. 19.
Better Late Than Never
Of Syracuse's 46 goals this season, 22 of them have come in the third period. The Orange's five goals in the final 20 minutes of play against Union on Oct. 22 were the most in the final frame in program history. SU's 22 third-period goals are the second most in the conference this season, and are the fifth most in the nation.
Carrie-Mattimoe Is Clutch On The Power Play
Junior forward Holly Carrie-Mattimoe has eight goals and five assists this season. Of her eight goals, four have come on the power play. Carrie-Mattimoe has 14 career power play tallies, one shy of tying Julie Rising's school record of 15. Carrie-Mattimoe is currently tied for 14th in the nation in power play goals.
Mullan Returns To The Ice
After suffering an injury on Oct. 7 that sidelined her for 12 games, Lisa Mullan returned to the ice for the Orange against Rensselaer last weekend. Mullan, who has played in 107 career games at SU, has 21 goals and 26 assists during that span. She scored the game-winning goal against St. Cloud State in the team's season-opener on Sep. 30.
Ferrara Named CHA Co-Rookie of the Week
Freshman winger Nicole Ferrara was named the College Hockey America (CHA) Co-Rookie of the Week on Monday after her performance in two Orange wins against Lindenwood last weekend.
Ferrara had one goal and two assists last weekend in two wins against Lindenwood. On Friday against the Lions, she had two helpers as the Orange skated to a 6-2 victory against the future CHA rival. On Saturday, Ferrara scored her first collegiate goal in overtime to lift the Orange to a 2-1 win. Ferrara has nine points (one goal, eight assists), and is tied for the team lead with Shiann Darkangelo and Caitlin Roach with eight assists. She is tied for 36th in the nation among rookie scorers at 0.50 points per game and tied for eighth in the CHA in assists.
