SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse University women's ice hockey team (11-14-5, 5-5-1) was held scoreless, 4-0, by No. 5 Mercyhurst (25-5, 14-0) through 60 minutes of action in a College Hockey America (CHA) matchup on Friday at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
Mercyhurst netted the first score of the game just 30 seconds after the opening puck drop. SU senior Ashley Cockell nearly evened the score but her shot from the top ricochet off the pipe. Despite being outshot 14-6 in the first period, Syracuse trailed 1-0 at the first intermission.
Syracuse held an 8-7 advantage in shots in the second period but could not find the back of the net. The Lakers tallied its second goal at the 12:54 mark and led 2-0 heading in to the locker room.
In the final period, Mercyhurst's power-play squad went to work and notched two more goals to produce the final score of the 4-0.
The Lakers outshot the Orange 44-20. A game-high 19 shots came from Mercyhurst's Meghan Agosta.
Freshman goaltender Kallie Billadeau turned away 40 Laker shot attempts in net for Syracuse.
The Orange and the Lakers will meet on the ice again tomorrow (Feb. 12) at 2 p.m. at Tennity Ice Pavilion for game- two of SU's Skate for the Cure weekend.
