SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse University women's ice hockey team (11-15-5, 5-6-1) was edged 4-2 by No. 5 Mercyhurst (26-5, 15-0) on Saturday at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
For the second straight game, Mercyhurst stuck first, at the 16:54 mark of the first period. Syracuse was able to even the score just six minutes later. Sophomore Holly Carrie-Mattimoe beat Laker goalie Hillary Pattenden for the score. Freshman Margot Scharfe and sophomore Isabel Menard were credited with assists on the play.
The second period belonged to the Lakers. Mercyhurst tallied its second goal with just more than five minutes remaining in the second stanza. Mercyhurst scored with 59 seconds to play in the second and led 3-1 heading into intermission.
Mercyhurst increased its lead to three, 4-1, just 3:30 into the final period. Syracuse fought back and Scharfe made it 4-2 with 11 minutes remaining in regulation. Carrie-Mattimoe's shot from just in front of the net was saved by Pattenden but Scharfe was there to clean up the rebound. Carrie-Mattimoe and junior Taylor Metcalfe earned assists on the score.
Both teams were scoreless in the final 11 minutes and the Lakers held on to win, 4-2.
Freshman goaltender Kallie Billadeau made 40 saves in net for the second consecutive game against Mercyhurst.
