ORANGE SEEKING BEST START SINCE 2000
If the Orange can get by the Great Danes Tuesday, Syracuse would improve 5-0. The last time the Orange opened a season with five consecutive victories was in 2000 when it began the year 7-0 before losing at Cornell. The 2000 Orange eventually went on to win the national championship and finished with an overall record of 15-1.
ANOTHER FAMILY AFFAIR
For the second time this season a Syracuse player will face one of his siblings. In the Army game, sophomore JoJo Marasco squared off against his brother, Matt, a Black Knights' defenseman. Against Albany, senior midfielder Jeremy Thompson will go up against his younger brother Miles, who is a rookie attackman for the Great Danes. Both Thompsons played their scholastic lacrosse at Lafayette High School.
Jeremy has five goals and four assists for the Orange this season. He also leads the team in faceoff winning percentage (.625, 20-32). Miles scored a career-high three goals against Delaware on March 5 to win America East Conference Rookie of the Week honors. He has five goals and seven total points on the year. In addition, Albany freshman attackman Ty Thompson is a cousin of Jeremy and Miles. Ty is second on the Great Danes with eight goals and nine points.
GALLOWAY AND KEOGH RECEIVE CONFERENCE HONORS
Orange senior goalie John Galloway and senior attackman Stephen Keogh were recognized by the BIG EAST Conference for their performances in SU's 9-8 overtime win against Georgetown at the Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic on March 12. Galloway was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career and Keogh was named to the league's weekly honor roll.
Galloway made a season-high 13 saves against the Hoyas. He anchored a Syracuse defense that held the Hoyas to eight goals, almost five less than their season average (12.75). The victory was the 48th of his career, eclipsing Jay Pfeifer's previous school record of 47 wins from 2002-05. Galloway also moved into sole possession of third place on the NCAA Division I career wins list.
Keogh scored four goals against the Hoyas, including the game-winner with 2:19 left in overtime. He also added an assist for a season-high five points on his way to game MVP honors. Three of Keogh's four goals came in the second half and the performance represented his 16th career hat trick.
SCOUTING THE GREAT DANES
Albany vaulted into the national polls this week after three straight home wins. The Great Danes are No. 14 in both the NIKE/Inside Lacrosse and USILA rankings. Albany has defeated Delaware, Massachusetts and Ohio State since losing its season opener on the road to Drexel on Feb. 26. Albany comes into the game averaging 9.5 goals per contest, while giving up 10.0. The team's offensive totals have been bogged down by an 0-for-18 showing on extra-man opportunities.
Junior attackman Joe Resetarits leads the team in points (13) and goals (10). Rookie Ty Thompson, cousin of SU's Jeremy Thompson, has been productive in his first college season. Thompson is second on the squad with eight goals and nine total points. Thompson netted three goals in the team's win against Ohio State. Midfielder Brian Caufield is Albany's primary feeder from up top. He leads the Great Danes with six assists.
Junior midfielder Keith Olson has 42 of Albany's 45 faceoff wins and leads the Great Danes in ground balls (33). Freshman goalie Edmund Cathers is a Syracuse native. He attended Corcoran High School and owns an 8.92 goals-against average. Cathers has 41 saves.
THE SERIES WITH ALBANY
The Orange has won all eight meetings with the Great Danes. The two schools have played every season since 2004, including twice that year as SU and Albany met in the first round of the NCAA playoffs. All eight pairings have taken place at the Carrier Dome and SU has scored at least 10 goals in each contest. The 2005 and 2006 meetings were the most competitive with Syracuse emerging as one-goal victors both times.
UP NEXT
The Orange will face archrival Johns Hopkins on Saturday, March 19 at 6 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. The game is a matchup of the two winningest programs in college lacrosse. The showdown will be televised live nationally on ESPNU.
