MANASQUAN, N.J. – The Syracuse tennis team beat St. Johns, 7-0, Saturday afternoon to complete its third-straight sweep of an opponent before losing to another BIG EAST opponent, Rutgers, in a 4-3 decision Sunday morning at the Atlantic Club. The Orange (13-5, 6-1) went 2-1 over the weekend, as it embarked on a three-day, three-match road swing against Army, St. John's and Rutgers.
Saturday's sweep of the Red Storm began with the Orange taking every doubles match and the doubles point. The No. 1 doubles pairing of junior co-captain Emily Harman and freshman Maddie Kobelt won their 10th straight doubles match at the top spot when they defeated St. Johns' duo of Ece Firat/Nevena Selakovic in an 8-1 decision.
Senior co-captain Simone Kalhorn paired with freshman Aleah Marrow at the No. 2 spot for their third win together this season, while senior co-captain Christina Tan returned to doubles play and paired with junior Alessondra Parra to capture another Orange victory at the No. 3 position.
Five-of-six of the singles matches were decided in straight-sets in favor of the Orange. One match, played between Tan and St. John's opponent Jenny Yonkus, was pushed to three sets, where Tan triumphed with the final score being 6-7(10-8), 6-4, 1-0(10-4). With the six additional singles points, the Orange took the match against the Red Storm, 7-0.
Sunday's match against Rutgers was much closer with Syracuse changing up its doubles pairs and losing two-of-three matches. Kalhorn and Parra were able to combine and defeat the Rutgers pairing of Leonora Slatnick and Vanessa Petrini, 8-4.
The Orange battled back in singles play, winning three-of-six matches for the team's only points of the day. Tan outlasted Ivey at the No. 3 singles spot after losing the first set, 5-7, and coming back with sets of 6-0, 6-4 to take the point.
Kalhorn also took her singles match against Maryana Milchustsky at the No. 4 spot to three sets. After losing the first set, 4-6, Kalhorn battled back to take the last two sets with scores of 6-0 and 6-1.
Marrow had the best day in singles play for the Orange, taking down Balasa at the No. 5 singles spot in straight sets of 6-0 and 6-0.
The team's loss to Rutgers was the Orange's first regular season loss to a conference opponent since a 1-6 loss to South Florida on March 15, 2009. Syracuse now moves to 6-1 in BIG EAST play and 13-5 overall for the 2011 campaign.
