NORFOLK, Va. – The Syracuse tennis team rebounded after a 6-1 loss to No. 49 William and Mary Saturday morning by dominating Old Dominion, 6-1, Sunday morning at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center. Freshman Aleah Marrow won both her singles matches throughout the weekend, extending her singles streak to five and providing the only point for the Orange (14-6, 6-1) against the nationally-ranked Tribe on Saturday.
Marrow's singles victory against William and Mary was the only bright spot for the Orange during Saturday's loss. The Durham, N.C. native played at the No. 6 slot and defeated the Tribe's Katie Kargl in straight sets of 6-2 and 6-3 for the point.
Syracuse was blanked everywhere else during the match, failing to win any other singles or doubles matches. Junior co-captain Emily Harman forced a three-set match against William and Mary's Hope Johnson at the No. 1 singles spot by winning the first set, 7-5. Johnson recovered and won the final two sets, 6-4 and 10-5.
Senior co-captain Simone Kalhorn also had a three-set duel with her singles opponent, Lauren Sabacinski, but eventually lost in a 5-7, 6-3, 10-4 final match score.
Sunday proved to be a much better day for the Orange, starting off with the squad winning two-of-three doubles matches to secure the first point of the day against the Monarchs of Old Dominion.
The No. 32 doubles pair in the nation, Harman and freshman Maddie Kobelt, convincingly beat their Monarch counterparts, 8-3, at the No. 1 doubles spot, while the pairing of senior co-captain Christina Tan and junior Alessondra Parra secured a win at the No. 3 doubles spot with a 8-6 win. Marrow and Kalhorn teamed up at the No. 2 doubles spot but lost, 3-8.
Singles play was almost completely dominated by Syracuse, with five-of-six matches going to the Orange. The squad's only loss came at the No. 1 spot, as Harman was defeated in straight sets of 4-6 and 2-6.
Kobelt fared better at the No. 2 spot, defeating her Monarch opponent in straight sets of 7-6. With her two wins over the weekend, the freshman leads the team with 29 overall wins on the season.
Parra lost her first set at the No. 3 position but outmuscled her opponent and won the final two sets, 7-6 and 10-5, for the win.
Tan and Kalhorn each bested their counterparts in straight sets to claim their singles matches at the No. 4 and No. 5 spots, respectively, and Marrow won her fifth straight at the No. 6 position.
Syracuse returns to the court next weekend when the team travels to Pennsylvania to take on BIG EAST foe Pittsburgh on Friday, April 8.
