SU Tennis Triumphs at Temple

PHILADELPHIA – The Syracuse tennis team won its second match in a row by defeating Temple, 6-1, on Sunday morning at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Center. The Orange has won eight of its last nine matches and moves to 9-2 on the season, while the Owls lost its second-straight match to move to 4-5 for the season.
Junior co-captain Emily Harman and freshman Maddie Kobelt earned their eighth doubles win as a pair when they teamed up at the No. 1 doubles spot to defeat Temple's Theresa Stangl and Christine Clermont. The 'Cuse's No. 2 pair of senior co-captain Simone Kalhorn and junior Alessondra Parra played a close match against Elyse Steiner and Lucie Pazderova but eventually lost, 8-6. Freshmen Aleah Marrow and Eva Raszkiewicz secured the doubles point for Syracuse by besting Temple's Mellana Cramer and Jordan Batey, 8-2, at the No. 3 doubles position.
Harman played at the No. 1 singles spot for the first time this season and made it count with a straight-set victory over Stangl.
Close singles matches were played at the No. 2 and No. 4 singles positions, where Parra and senior co-captain Christina Tan played, respectively. Parra, who went head-to-head with Temple's Steiner, won her first set, 6-2, but lost the second with the same score. She sealed the victory with a 10-8 win in the third set. Tan, who matched up against Temple's Yana Mavrina, had the opposite result and won her first set but fell short in her final two to lose the match at the No. 4 spot.
Kobelt, Kalhorn and Marrow turned things around with straight-set wins at the No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 singles spots, respectively. Kobelt's second victory of the day pushed her overall record to 17-5 for the season, which leads the team in that category. Kalhorn's singles victory gave her the 92nd overall win of her career and Marrow's two on the day gave her a 12-8 overall record so far in her freshman campaign.
The Orange will hit the court again Thursday, March 10, when it hosts Cornell at the Drumlins Tennis Center. Syracuse is putting its home winning streak of 19-straight matches on the line when the Big Red comes to town. The match begins at 6:30 p.m. and admission is free.
