Syracuse Sweeps on Senior Day

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse tennis team ended its regular season by sweeping BIG EAST rival Connecticut, 7-0, Friday morning at the Drumlins Tennis Center. The match was also the team's last home match and three seniors, Simone Kalhorn, Christina Tan and Jacquelynn Tang, were honored before the match for their contributions to the program throughout the past four years.
The Orange began the match with dominating doubles play, claiming all three matches. Junior co-captain Emily Harman and freshman Maddie Kobelt teamed up at the No. 1 doubles spot and defeated the Husky pairing of Emily Herb and Jennifer Lermonth in an 8-3 decision. With the win, the nationally-ranked duo earned their 17th win as a doubles pair this season.
Kalhorn paired up with freshman Aleah Marrow at the No. 2 doubles spot and bested UConn's Alexa Gregory and Abby McKeon, 8-5, while Tan paired with junior Alessondra Parra for an 8-3 win against Lucy Nutting and Marie Gargiulo at the No. 3.
Syracuse continued its strong singles play and took all six matches for the second consecutive week . The team is a combined 93-39 in singles play this season and has won 17 of its last 18 singles matches.
Harman was at the top spot for the 11th time this season and easily defeated Lermonth in straight sets of 6-1 and 6-4. With the victory, Harman inched closer to joining the 100 Wins Club – she is currently just one shy of the prestigious century mark.
Parra won her third singles match in a row with a straight-set victory over Herb at No. 2 singles and now has 81 overall wins in her career at Syracuse.
Kobelt played at the No. 3 spot and had to battle back from an early 5-0 deficit in the first set against Gregory. The freshman rallied and won the first set, 7-6, before taking the second, 6-2, and the win.
Kalhorn and Tan closed out their Syracuse careers at home with straight-set victories at the No. 4 and No. 5 singles spots, respectively. Kalhorn easily beat UConn's Lauren Wilmarth, 6-1, 6-1, while Tan dominated McKeon in a 6-0, 6-1 showing.
Marrow, playing at the No. 6, pushed her singles win streak to seven with a 6-4, 6-2 win against Nutting.
The sweep was the team's seventh of the season sixth against a BIG EAST opponent. Syracuse has dominated their conference foes all season, outscoring them by a 49-7 margin. The win also capped the second-straight season in which Syracuse has remained undefeated at home. The squad was a perfect 10-0 this season while playing at Drumlins.
The Orange is now 16-6 overall and 8-1 in conference play and will travel to South Bend, Ind. to compete in the BIG EAST Tournament next weekend.
