SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Syracuse tennis team defeated St. John's, 4-0, in the first round of the 2011 BIG EAST Women's Tennis Tournament Thursday morning at the Eck Tennis Pavilion. The Orange now advances to the quarterfinal round and will play No. 2 South Florida Friday morning at 9 a.m.
Due to the weather in South Bend, tournament play in the first round was played singles first and would continue to doubles if needed. Syracuse won the majority of the match points, 4, in as many singles matches to clinch the victory and move on.
Junior co-captain Emily Harman earned her 100th career victory when she defeated her St. John's opponent, Novena Selakovic, 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 1 singles spot. Harman is the 27th person in program history to reach the century mark in their career at Syracuse.
Junior Alessondra Parra and senior co-captain Christina Tan also won their matches in straight sets at the No. 2 and No. 5 singles spots, respectively.
Freshman Aleah Marrow clinched the victory for the Orange with a win against Nakita Austin at the No. 6 spot. Marrow defeated Austin in straight sets of 6-4 and 6-3.
With the win, Syracuse head coach Luke Jensen earned his 75th career victory. In his five seasons at SU, Jensen has compiled a 75-39 record and owns the best winning percentage (.658) in program history.
Syracuse improves to 17-6 on the season. The 17 wins this season is the second-most wins in a season for a Syracuse tennis team. The only team to surpass this mark was last year's Orange team that went 20-3 in its 2009-10 campaign.
