SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Freshman Aleah Marrow secured her ninth consecutive singles victory as the Orange's run at a BIG EAST Tournament title was cut short with a 4-1 setback against second-seeded South Florida at Leeper Parker Tennis Center.
Marrow clinched the Orange's only point with a 6-3, 6-3 win at the No. 6 singles spot. She has strung together nine consecutive wins at the No. 5 and 6 positions. The rookie has not lost a match since March 16 when SU lost to then-No. 62 San Diego State.
The doubles pair of junior Alessondra Parra and senior co-captain Christina Tan secured SU's only victory in doubles action. The duo handled USF's third doubles pair of Alessandra Bonte and Kate Parker with ease, cruising to an 8-2 triumph. SU eventually lost the doubles point as junior co-captain Emily Harman and freshman Maddie Kobelt were edged, 9-7, in a close tiebreaker match.
In other singles action, Tan lost to USF's Alessandra Bonte, 6-1, 6-3, at the No. 5 position. Harman's three-match win streak at the first singles spot was snapped by the Bulls' Irene Rehberger by a score of 6-4, 6-3. The match was decided as Kobelt was defeated in a hard fought tiebreaker, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2. Kobelt bested South Florida's Janette Bejlkova in the first set but could not hold onto the lead.
Syracuse will now compete in the consolation bracket on Saturday, April 30 against No. 6 Rutgers at 9 a.m. SU was edged by the Scarlet Knights, 4-3 earlier this season.
