SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Syracuse University softball team (35-11, 11-5) earned a pair of shutout victories at Seton Hall on Saturday. The Orange recorded a 10-0, five-inning mercy rule victory in game one and defeated the Pirates, 5-0, in game two. With the wins, the squad extended it win streak to five games, with all victories coming by way of shutout.
Syracuse is now just one win shy of tying its best regular-season program performance. In 2006, the squad recorded 36 victories.
Hallie Gibbs, Lisaira Daniels, Stephanie Watts, and Jasmine Watson led the Orange offense in the twin bill. Gibbs tallied five RBI on three hits, while L. Daniels batted .429 with three RBI. Watts registered a hit in each game, as well as an RBI. Watson was a perfect three-for-three in game one and tallied two homeruns and three RBI on the day. With today's homeruns, Watson tied SU's single-season freshman record for homeruns (9).
In game one, the Orange jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back. Lacey Kohl drew a two-out walk to get on base and bring Gibbs to the plate, who blasted homer deep to centerfield to put SU up, 2-0, in the top of the first.
After holding Seton Hall to just two base runners in the home half of the inning, the SU offense came out firing once again in the top of the second, plating six to put the game away early. Jenna Caira got the rally started with a single up the middle. Morgan Nandin reached on an error and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Veronica Grant laced an RBI single to right field. Nandin also scored on the play due to an error by the Pirates' right fielder, putting SU on top, 4-0. Watts followed with a one-bagger up the middle to score Grant, before L. Daniels sent a long ball over the centerfield wall to extend Syracuse's lead to 7-0. Gibbs tallied the final RBI of the inning, as her single scored pinch runner Emily Thompson, who was on base due to another Kohl walk.
Syracuse added its final two runs of the game in the top of the fourth, thanks to a Watson two-run homerun. The SU defense did not allow a Seton Hall runner to advance past second base for the entire game. Caira and Stacy Kuwik combined for seven strikeouts and just one hit in the five-inning, 10-0, mercy rule victory.
In game two, the Orange plated three runs in the top of the first. The game started in similar fashion to the previous one, as Kohl walked and Gibbs nailed a deep homerun to give SU a quick 2-0 lead. Watson added a solo homer to left center before the inning ended.
The bats on both sides were silent until the fourth inning, when the Orange struck again. Caira nailed a leadoff double to left center and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Nandin. Grant was hit by a pitch, and Watts followed with a RBI double. L. Daniels registered the last RBI of the game with a sacfrice fly to center, which scored Grant.
Caira hurled a perfect four innings before Kuwik entered in relief to finish off the Pirates and solidify the 5-0 victory.
