SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior Leah Porter (DeWitt, N.Y.) and senior Kenny Marfilius (Collingdale, Pa.) are the Syracuse University Scholar-Athletes of the Week for the week of May 16, 2011. Porter is a member of the two-time BIG EAST Tournament Champion softball team, while Marfilius is the coxswain for the men's crew varsity eight.
Porter, who is majoring in selected studies in education, is a two-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team honoree and has made the Athletic Director's Honor Roll every semester at Syracuse. She has played in 28 games, including two starts, and has scored seven runs as a pinch runner for the Orange.
Porter and the Orange, which won the 2011 BIG EAST Tournament to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship, will play Louisiana State University in the NCAA Regional on Friday, May 20 in College Station, Texas. Texas A&M and Sacred Heart are the other teams in the double-elimination regional, which will be hosted by Texas A&M.
Marfilius guided the varsity eight to a fifth place finish in the Grand Final at the Eastern Sprints, which is the best finish during head coach Dave Reischman's nine-year tenure at Syracuse. The Orange was ranked sixth in the final EARC Heavyweight Varsity Eight Poll. A dual major in health and wellness, and psychology, Marfilius was the coxswain of the 2009-10 and 2008-09 varsity eight boats. As a freshman in 2007-08, he was the coxswain of the freshman eight.
