SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The seventh-ranked Syracuse men's rowing varsity eight defeated No. 12 Dartmouth on Sunday, May 22 to take home the Packard Cup for the fifth time in the last six years. The Orange crossed the finish line more than two seconds ahead of the Big Green at Onondaga Lake. Overall, Syracuse won all four races against Dartmouth in its final dual races of the season.
The Orange, under the direction of head coach Dave Reischman, won the varsity eight race with a time of 5:37.7, while Dartmouth posted a time of 5:40.5. Syracuse has now won 17 of its last 21 cup races, dating back to 2006. SU is now 32-6 in dual races during that same span of time.
“It was good for the seniors to get a win in our last dual race and our final race at home,” said senior co-captain Vince Berry. “We did a good job against Dartmouth, which is a fast crew that finished just a few spots behind us at Eastern Sprints. We knew they would be fast and they gave us a good race.”
Coming off a third-place finish in the Grand Final at Eastern Sprints, Syracuse's second varsity eight defeated Dartmouth with a time of 5:47.0. The Big Green finished in 5:58.98. In the freshman eight race, Syracuse was first with a time of 5:58.0, while Dartmouth crossed the finish line in 6:02.2. In the final race of the day, Syracuse's third varsity four completed the Orange's sweep of the Big Green with a winning time of 6:29.9. Dartmouth finished the race with a time of 6:51.1.
Following the races and trophy presentations, Syracuse's senior class was honored for their dedication to the program. Vince Berry, Dan Berry, Tim Daigle, Mike Gennaro, Matt Hopeck, Chip Keyes, Kenny Marfilius and Dan Turner raced for the final time on their home course.
In addition, Syracuse dedicated its newest vessel, the “Joseph E. Peter IV”. Mr. Joseph Peter has been a long-time supporter of the Orange men's crew program. Mr. Peter and his family have also established both a scholarship endowment and a boat fund with the University.
The Orange now has two weeks to prepare for the IRA Regatta, which is considered the national championship of the sport. Syracuse will try to improve on its sixth-place finish in the varsity eight Grand Final last season.
“We just have to listen to Coach Reischman,” said Gennaro, who also serves as a co-captain. “He has ideas on to get us more speed. We just have to trust him and believe in what we are doing.”
With final exams completed, the Orange can concentrate on what it will take to return to the IRA Grand Final.
“We can relax and focus on our goals and hopefully reach our potential at IRAs,” Gennaro said.
The 109th IRA Regatta will take place on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J. June 2-4.
