
Softball Hosts Louisville in Regular-Season Finale

SYRACUSE – The Syracuse University softball team will wrap up the 2011 regular season with a three-game series against BIG EAST-rival Louisville this weekend at the SU Softball Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for noon on Saturday and 11 a.m. on Sunday. Live video of Saturday's contests will be available on SUAthletics.com via Orange All Access, as well live audio of Sunday's game. The Orange (38-11, 12-5) set a program record for regular-season wins with its two victories versus Niagara on Wednesday. SU enters the final series of the season in fifth place in the BIG EAST Conference standings with a 12-5 league record, only a game in the loss column behind Louisville and two games in the in loss column behind South Florida.
Junior pitcher Jenna Caira now owns the SU single-season strikeout record with 274. She surpasses Erin Downey, who fanned 263 batters in 2006. Caira has pitched 38 consecutive scoreless innings and has given up just one earned run in her last 57 frames. Junior outfielder Lisaira Daniels continues to lead the Orange offensively with a .356 batting average to go along with 41 runs and 32 RBI.
The Cardinals (34-14, 12-4 BIG EAST) are led offensively by freshman right-fielder Hanna Kiyohara, who is batting .398 with 18 runs and 22 RBIs. Sophomore first baseman Alicja Wolny follows at .379 with 14 doubles and 36 RBI. Senior third baseman Chelsea Bemis rounds out the top three at .373 with a at .379 with a team-best eight home runs and 38 RBI.
Freshman Caralisa Connell (18-7) carries a 2.34 ERA with 142 strikeouts in 173.0 innings of work. Junior LHP Tori Collins (14-6) carries a 2.23 ERA with 134 strikeouts in 132.0 innings and is holding opponents to a .200 batting average.
Louisville leads the all-time series, 10-3. Syracuse did take a 3-2 nonconference win at the 2011 'Bama Bash earlier this year. Senior second baseman Stephanie Watts' three-run homer proved to be all the scoring SU would need. The Orange also beat the Cardinals, 2-1, in the title game of the 2010 BIG EAST Championship in Louisville.
