The Orange will play its third home game in four outings when it hosts Toledo at the Carrier Dome on Saturday (12:00 p.m., BIG EAST Network). Syracuse is 2-0 at home this season and enters the contest with an overall mark of 2-1 after losing at USC last weekend. The Rockets are 1-2 after a 40-15 defeat at the hands of Boise State on September 16. Fans can listen to the game on Syracuse ISP Sports Network (TK-99.5 FM in Syracuse), Orange All Access. For game highlights, head coach Doug Marrone's postgame press conference and student-athlete interviews, sign on to Orange All Access following the game.
At halftime against Toledo, there will be a special ceremony to honor the late John Mackey. A member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Mackey died at age 69 on July 6, 2011 after a long battle with dementia. Mackey was a tight end for the Orange from 1960-62 before being selected by the Baltimore Colts with the 19th pick in the 1963 NFL Draft. The first 10,000 fans to enter the Dome will receive a commemorative magnet featuring Mackey's No. 88 as well as a card highlighting his college and professional football accomplishments.
Syracuse-Toledo Series
Syracuse is 2-0 all-time against the Rockets, including a 1-0 mark at the Carrier Dome. The Orange has outscored Toledo 69-19 in the two games. The last meeting occurred in 2003 with SU emerging victorious, 34-7, on the strength of a 162-yard, two-touchdown performance by running back Walter Reyes.
Striking First Is A Good Sign
Syracuse tends to come out on top when scoring the first points of the game. The Orange is 9-4 all-time under head coach Doug Marrone when it scores first, including a 5-1 record in 2010, and a 1-1 mark this season. The Orange is unbeaten since Marrone took over in 2009 when it scores at least 21 points at home. Syracuse is 8-0 in that scenario, including a 2-0 mark this season.
Nassib Among FBS Leaders in Completion Percentage
While the NCAA does not track individual leaders in completion percentage, senior quarterback Ryan Nassib's mark of .726 (74-of-102) in 2011 is ninth-best on the NCAA's list of top-100 FBS passers ranked by average number of completions per game. Robert Griffin III of Baylor leads the group at .837 (41-of-49). He, Seth Doege of Texas Tech and UNC's Bryn Renner are each above 80 percent. Of the top-10, only Arizona's Nick Foles, Duke's Sean Renfree, Oklahoma State's Brandon Weeden and Nassib have attempted at least 100 passes.
Nassib was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the third consecutive week after a 25-of-37 performance for 230 yards and one touchdown against USC.
Dynamic Duo
Receivers Van Chew and Alec Lemon have combined for 39 receptions, 458 yards and five touchdowns in 2011. Both players rank in the top-10 in the BIG EAST in receiving yards per game. Chew is second (80.0) and Lemon is eighth (72.7) At eight catches per contest, Lemon is also tied for 13th nationally in receptions per game. At USC, Lemon became the first non-quarterback to throw a touchdown pass for the Orange since Kevin Johnson in 1998 versus West Virginia. Lemon hit Chew for a 28-yard score after a lateral in the third quarter.
Magic Number
Since defensive coordinator Scott Shafer took over in 2009, the Orange defense has held its opponent to less than 100 yards rushing 10 times, and Syracuse is 8-2 in those games. Including its 36-29 season-opening victory in which Wake Forest managed just 80 yards rushing on 43 attempts (1.9 per attempt), the Orange has won five straight when holding the opposition to less than 100 yards on the ground.
Raupers And Fisher Share Punting Duties
Junior Shane Raupers (15 punts, 578 yards, 38.5 average) and freshman Jonathan Fisher (two punts, 87 yards, 43.5 average) are teaming to handle the Orange punting duties. Fisher made his college debut at USC and handled SU's last two punts against the Trojans. Raupers was SU's opening day punter. His first appearance stacked up favorably with the debuts of the top punters in Orange football history, including Rob Long and Sean Reali.
SU Nears Attendance Milestone
Syracuse will surpass the eight million mark in home attendance at the Carrier Dome at some point during the 2011 season. The Orange has drawn 7,931,824 fans since the stadium opened in 1980. It has averaged 41.746 fans per game and is 68,176 short of the eight-million mark.
