WASHINGTON, D.C. -- No. 18/17 Georgetown (14-4, 3-2) turned 31 SU turnovers into 38 points and used a 41-13 halftime lead to down the Syracuse women's basketball team (12-7, 1-4) on Sunday at McDonough Arena, 69-42. Kayla Alexander led the Orange with 13 points and added 10 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season, and Iasia Hemingway registered 14 points (12 in the second half).
After shooting 13.8 percent from the floor, the Orange picked up the tempo in the second half on 11-of-30 shooting from the floor. Georgetown was 25-of-57 (44%) for the game, including 12-of-25 from beyond the arc.
The Hoyas never trailed in the game, and had three players score in double figures, led by 23 from Sugar Rodgers. Tia Magee added 11 points (all in the first half) and a game-high six steals, while Rubylee Wright contributed 15.
The Orange missed its first 12 shots from the floor, falling behind 16-1 before Carmen Tyson-Thomas (eight points) recorded SU's first field goal of the game on a driving layup and foul for a 3-point play at the 12:33 mark, making it 16-4.
Syracuse, which outrebounded the Hoyas 22-19 in the first half, continued to do so in the second, finishing with a 46-37 edge, including 27 offensive boards.
SU opened the second half on an 8-2 run, capped by a layup from Alexander. The Orange would cut the deficit to 20 with 13:30 left in regulation as Hemingway grabbed an offensive board before going right back up with the ball for two.
Hemingway would score six straight SU points during a two minute span late in the second half to enter double digits for the 15th time this season.
Syracuse will continue its road swing next Sunday, January 22 as SU travels to Seton Hall for a 2:00 p.m. tip.
