SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- After more than one month off, the Syracuse track & field team will return to competition this weekend at the Cornell Upstate Challenge on Saturday in Ithaca. Most events will begin at 1:00 p.m. from Barton Hall with the men's 5,000-meter run as well as several field competitions. SU will also be competing against Binghamton, Buffalo, Colgate, Cortland and Ithaca.
The Cornell Upstate Challenge gives the Orange the first opportunity for athletes to qualify for the BIG EAST Championship. As the first competition of the 2012 campaign for a majority of SU's experienced competitors, the Orange hopes to get off to a fast start.
This will be the second straight meet for Syracuse at Barton Hall in Ithaca. In early December, freshman Jihaad Howard and senior Darryl White both secured sports in the IC4A competition with top-ten finishes in the 60-meter dash. Both Howard and White will be running in the same even this weekend as well as part of the 4x400-meter relay with Jaquan Holland and Tyler McCully.
Reed Kamyszek and Jon Squeri, who competed at the 2011 USA Championships last spring, will be running in the mile and 3000-meter run, respectively.
On the women's side, senior Ieva Staponkute will see her first action of the season in the triple jump. Staponkute finished third in the event at last season's BIG EAST Indoor Championships, along with fellow senior Flings Owusu-Agyapong.
