Tumolo Earns BIG EAST Preseason Honor

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Michelle Tumolo is the BIG EAST Women's Lacrosse Preseason Offensive Player of the Year in a vote by the league's head coaches. The Orange earned three first-place votes and was picked to finish second in the coaches poll, just one point behind preseason favorite Georgetown.
Tumolo was one of three Syracuse players chosen to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. She was joined by sophomore Katie Webster and junior Becca Block. Tumolo and Webster were unanimous selections.
Georgetown earned five first-place votes and narrowly beat out Syracuse for the top spot in the poll with 60 points. The Orange was right behind with 59 points. Loyola received one first-place vote and was picked third with 51 points. Notre Dame was fourth with 44 points followed by Rutgers (34 pts.), Connecticut (27 pts.), Louisville (26 pts.), Villanova (12 pts.) and Cincinnati (11 pts.).
Tumolo earned first-team All-BIG EAST and All-Northeast Region honors last season after leading the team in scoring with 63 points. Her 33 assists were the most for a sophomore in school history. Tumolo ranks 10th on Syracuse's career scoring list with 137 points and is fifth on the all-time assists list with 70.
Webster recorded 39 points in her freshman campaign and was voted to the All-Conference First Team. She tied for second on the team in goals with 32 to go along with seven assists. Webster was one of only two sophomores named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Block, who earned second-team All-BIG EAST honors last season, started every game on defense in 2011 and helped SU hold its opponents to less than 10 goals nine times. She recorded career highs in draw controls (24), ground balls (16) and caused turnovers (8).
Syracuse opens the 2012 season on Tuesday, Jan. 21 against Boston College. The opening draw is set for 4 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
