
#13 'Cuse Pushes #1 UNC to the Finish

No. 13 Syracuse University women's lacrosse pushed defending national champion and top-ranked North Carolina to the wire before falling, 13-9, in a back-and-forth battle at the JMA Wireless Dome Friday afternoon.
Caroline Trinkaus, Molly Guzik, and Emma Muchnick each contributed two goals for the Orange (0-2, 0-1 ACC) while Guzik added an assist to lead Syracuse with three points. Daniella Guyette made 14 saves at a 51.9 percent clip for Syracuse.Â
North Carolina's (2-0, 1-0 ACC) Chloe Humphrey and Kate Levy posted five points apiece, both logging three goals and two assists. Caroline Godine posted four points on two goals and two assists. Betty Nelson saved four Syracuse shots.
The Tar Heels struck first, but the Orange responded with three unanswered goals to close the first quarter and take a 3-1 lead. Guzik tied the game at 1-1 just over a minute after North Carolina's opener before Gracie Britton and Muchnick netted their first goals of the season.
The second quarter featured seven goals and three ties. North Carolina erased the deficit with two goals in the first five minutes of the frame to tie the game. Syracuse answered quickly as Trinkaus scored less than a minute later for her first of the contest to reclaim the lead, 4-3. The teams traded goals twice more before Muchnick found the net with 54 seconds remaining in the half to give Syracuse a 6-5 advantage at the break.
The Tar Heels outscored the Orange, 3-1, in the third quarter to pull ahead, 8-7, before the fourth quarter. The lone goal for Syracuse in the frame came from former Tar Heel Mackenzie Rich.
Guzik scored her second goal of the game 40 seconds into the fourth quarter to tie it at 8-8. North Carolina responded with three unanswered goals to take an 11-8 lead. Trinkaus netted her second of the day to cut the deficit, but the Tar Heels added two more in the waning minutes to secure the 13-9 victory.
Syracuse continues its run of top-10 opponents on Friday, February 20 with a trip out west to meet No. 5 Stanford in Palo Alto, California. Game time is slated for 8:30 p.m. ET (5:30 PT).Â
