SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After Syracuse erased a ten-point second half deficit, Bjonee Reaves hit a jumper with 2.5 seconds left to lead Cincinnati (10-11, 1-7) past the Orange women's basketball team (13-9, 2-6), 55-54 on Saturday at the Carrier Dome. Syracuse used a 7-0 and 8-0 run in the final 20 minutes to climb back into the game as Iasia Hemingway led the SU with 12 points and seven rebounds.
"The tough part of that game is I thought we did a great job of getting back into the game," head coach Quentin Hillsman said. "I think this was a learning experience for our entire team and we will keep doing what we are doing."
Syracuse shot 38% (24-of-64) for the game while the two teams combined for 36 turnovers. The Orange held a 44-31 edge in rebounds and had 38 second chance points following 26 offensive boards.
Kayla Cook led four Bearcats in double-figures with 14 points, while Jeanise Randolph added 11 and 13 rebounds off the bench.
Both teams struggled to score during the opening ten minutes of the game as the Orange opened the contest 1-of-10 from the floor. Kayla Alexander got things started for SU with an offensive board and put back to make it 2-0 Syracuse.
The Bearcats never let the Orange lead get above five points, and clawed to within one with 8:54 left in the half on a bucket from Randolph which started a 7-0 Cincinnati run to take a 14-10 advantage.
Cincinnati would open up a seven point lead with less than one minute left in the half, but Leary would cut the deficit to five with a layup in the paint.
With Syracuse down 36-30 five minutes into the second half, Carmen Tyson-Thomas brought the Orange to within four with a jumper from the wing. The comeback continued midway through the second half as SU went on a quick 4-0 run with four points from Phylesha Bullard and two from La'Shay Taft to tie the score at 43.
The Bearcats answered with five straight, including a three-pointer from Cook that rattled in with 6:58 left in regulation. That's when Hemingway went to work with four straight points, including a runner in the lane to give the Orange its first lead since 8:54 of the first half (10-9) to make it 52-50.
After Cook nailed a three-pointer from the left side giving Cincinnati a one-point lead at 53-52, Elashier Hall would nail a 12-foot jumper to retake the lead.
Hall fouled the Bearcats twice in the final seconds in an effort to cause a turnover, but Reaves' bucket in the lane sunk the Orange and gave Cincinnati its first BIG EAST win of the season.
Syracuse will return to action on Tuesday at Providence for a 7:00 p.m. tip.
