Track & Field Wraps Weekend Competition

Following a record-breaking afternoon on Friday, the Syracuse track & field team continued its successful weekend at the Penn State National Invitational, Boston University Terrier Invitational, and the Colgate Class of '32 Invitational.
Senior Ieva Staponkute, who had a 12.16-meter leap in the triple jump last weekend, showed improvement in State College, Pa. with a 12.22-meter jump, good for a third place finish overall.
Jaquan Holland and Darryl White ran neck and neck in the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash, each finishing with a time of 6.88 seconds to reach semifinal action. Holland would also compete in the 200-meter dash, finishing seventh (22.09).
In the field, Frank Taylor finished second in the long jump with a BIG EAST qualifying leap of 7.32-meters.
In Boston, freshman Ryan Urie qualified for the conference championships with a third place finish in the 1000-meter run at 2:25.83, and will be joined by teammates Andrew Nelson and Justin Murray after their 4:13.27 and 4:18.57 finishes in the mile run, respectively.
Martin Hehir, Reed Kamsyzek, Corey Robinson and Tito Medrano secured spots in the league championships after they placed ninth (8:06.63), 20th (8:17.75), 22nd (8:21.12) and 24th (8:23.77) in the 3000-meter run. Andrew Palmer, Pat Dupont, Patrick Geoghegan and Jon Squeri would have a similar result in the 5000-meter run.
The Orange will be back in action this weekend as Syracuse travels to the Armory in New York City for the New Balance Collegiate Invite, which begins Friday afternoon.
