SU Opens Up CHA Play at Penn State

The Orange ice hockey team heads to Penn State to open up CHA play this weekend. The two squads face off on Saturday, Oct. 13th at 7 p.m. and again on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Orange fell in it its first two games this season to New Hampshire and No. 10 Northeastern while PSU split its opening weekend, 1-1, with Vermont.
The Orange vs. New Hampshire
• In its first game of the 2012-13 season, the Orange dropped a close game to New Hampshire, 4-3. The score stayed even for the most of the contest until the Wildcats scored a power play tally with 1:30 left in the game to secure the win.
• Senior Holly Carrie-Mattimoe led the scoring attack against the Wildcats, registering three points off of two goals and one assist. Junior defenseman Caitlin Roach tallied a goal and an assist for the Orange while.
• Junior goaltender Jenesica Drinkwater notched 16 saves against the Wildcats.
The Orange vs. Northeastern
•Syracuse fell to No. 10 Northeastern, 5-2. Kallie Goodnough tallied a goal for the Orange in the second period. SU outshot the Huskies, 18-4 in the second frame.
• Freshman Laurie Kingsbury tallied a team-high 11 shots in her debut weekend for the Orange. She also scored her first career goal in the third period with four minutes left in the game. Two freshmen, Danielle Leslie and Melissa Piacentini had the two assists.
• Drinkwater got her second start in net this season against the Huskies. Drinkwater tallied 20 saves against Northeastern.

• Penn State earned its first win as a Division I program Saturday night, defeating Vermont, 5-3, are looking to earn their first CHA win this weekend when they host Syracuse.
• The Nittany Lions are led by the reigning CHA Rookie of the Week, Micayla Catanzariti, with two goals and one assist. Fellow freshmen Birdie Shaw also has two goals and one assist, while sophomore Jess Desorcie has three assists
• Nicole Paniccia became the first goaltender to record a win in school history, making 31 saves
The First Of Many
• The Syracuse vs. Penn State game will be the first women's Division I hockey game held on the campus of Penn State. This is the Nittany Lions first year of having a women's varsity program.
Conference Openers
• The Orange is 2-2 in conference openers and 0-2 when they are on the road.
• Last season, the Orange were defeated at Robert Morris, 2-1 and lost to Robert Morris in its inaugural season, 1-0.
• SU won its conference openers against Niagara, 2-1, in 2009 and Wayne State, 3-0, in 2010.
Shooting Frenzy
• The Orange outshot both of its opponents the first weekend of play.
• Against UNH, SU tallied 38 shots,while the Wildcats registered 20.
• In its game against No. 10 Northeastern, the Orange registered 37 shots compared to the Huskie's 25.
Energized in the Second
• The Orange offense was explosive in the second period against Northeastern, registering a season-high 18 shots in the frame.
• They limited the Huskies only four shots and zero goals in the second 20 minutes of play after allowing four goals in the first period.
Freshman Connection
• Redshirt freshman Laurie Kingsbury's first career goal in the game against Northeastern was assisted by fellow freshmen, Danielle Leslie and Melissa Piacentini.
• The assists were both Leslie's and Piacentini's first career points.
• Kingsbury tallied an assist against UNH for her first career point the night before.
Power Play Leader
• Holly Carrie-Mattimoe's power-play tally in the first period against New Hampshire was the 16th of her career.
• Carrie-Mattimoe now sits alone at the top of SU's all-time power-play goal list with 16. Behind her is Julie Rising (2008-11) with 15.
Record Book Watch
• Senior forward Holly Carrie-Mattimoe's name can be seen throughout out the Orange record book.
• She sits in fourth with games play (107), third in points (73), fifth with goals (31) and 3rd with assists (42).
• Carrie-Mattimoe has scored the most power-play goals in the history of the Orange (16) and only needs three more assists to move into second.
Tri-Captains
• Senior defenseman Jacquie Greco, senior forward Holly Carrie-Mattimoe and junior forward Margot Scharfe will serve as the Orange tri-captains this season. Greco was an assistant captain last season.
Welcome to the Orange
• The Orange added six newcomers to its roster this season Freshman Julie Bengis will join the goaltending corps while Nicole Renault and Danielle Leslie will join the veterans on defense. Melissa Piacentini, Marianne Thomaris and Emily Auerbacher will add to the Orange's strong offense.

The Orange returns home to play Quinnipiac on Friday, Oct. 19th (4 p.m.) and Saturday, Oct. 20th (2 p.m.).
