In its CHA opener, the Syracuse ice hockey team defeated Penn State, 4-0, at the Greenberg Ice Pavilion. Junior goaltender Jenesica Drinkwater notched her first shutout of the season and third of her career in the Orange's (1-2-0, 1-0-0 CHA) first win of 2012-13. Freshman forward Melissa Piacentini, sophomore, forward Nicole Ferrara and sophomore forward Shiann Darkangelo each scored their first goals of the season against the Nittany Lions (1-2-0, 0-1-0 CHA).
"It was good to get the first win of the season tonight," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "It was a well-earned shutout for Drinkwater and our overall defensive play. Penn State played hard and made us work for our goals."
The Orange registered 57 shots against the Nittany Lions, which is the most shots in a single game in SU history. SU had previously registered a high of 53 shots at Sacred Heart in 2009.
The first period remained scoreless between the two conference opponents. The Orange tallied 28 shots on goal while Drinkwater made three saves in the first frame. SU's 28 shots were the most recorded in a single period this season.
SU got into its offensive grove in the second period after Ferrara scored her seventh goal of her career 3:19 into the second period. Junior Margot Scharfe was credited with the assist.
Four minutes later, junior Caitlin Roach found Piacentini who then netted her first collegiate goal, putting the Orange up 2-0.
It was then Darkangelo's turn to score her first goal of the season. After receiving the puck from Laurie Kingsbury and Kallie Goodnough, the sophomore extended Syracuse's lead to 3-0.
Senior Holly Carrie-Mattimoe scored with 46 seconds left to secure the Orange's win. Ferrara and Scharfe each scored two points against PSU after being credited with the assists on Carrie-Mattimoe's goal.
Drinkwater notched a season-high 21 saves in the game.
The Orange and Nittany Lions meet again tomorrow at 2 p.m. to wrap up the weekend series.
