Gait Named Regional Coach of the Year

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse head coach Gary Gait was named the 2012 Division I Northeast Region Coach of the Year by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) on Tuesday, Oct. 2. Gait, who earns the award for the second time in his career, led the Orange to its first appearance in the national championship game last season.
Syracuse posted a record of 19-4 in 2012, setting a single-season record for wins. SU won a school-record 15 consecutive games and went undefeated in BIG EAST play during the regular season for the second time in program history.
The Orange earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament where it defeated Dartmouth and North Carolina to advance to the national semifinals for the third time in five years. In the second-largest comeback in tournament history, the Orange overcame a seven-goal deficit to defeat No. 1 Florida in double overtime to reach the championship game where it lost to Northwestern, 8-6.
Since taking over the helm of the program in August, 2007, Gait has guided Syracuse to a record of 76-27, three appearances in the NCAA Tournament semifinals and four BIG EAST regular-season titles.
