CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Syracuse men's crew competed on Sunday at the Head of the Charles in Cambridge, Mass., finishing 27th in the championship men's eight.
Also competing in the champ 8+ against his alma mater was 2011 Syracuse alum and 2012 Olympian Mike Gennaro, finishing 28th with the USRowing crew.
Head Coach Dave Reischman's Orange 8+ consisting of coxswain Liz Abraham and rowers Cameron Bierwith, Mason Leasure, Jake Martens, Patrick O'Shaughnessy-Hunter, Nick Pickard, Kyle Rogers, Tyler Toporowski and Mac Zink made its fall season debut in a time of 16:24.46, including a one-minute interference penalty.
Gennaro's USRowing crew finished in a time 19:07.51, which included four minutes of penalty time.
The Head of the Charles, the world's largest two-day rowing event, was first held on October 16, 1965. "Head" races, a class of regattas, are generally three-mile races against each other and the clock, with boats starting 15 seconds apart. The regatta featured over 9,000 prominent athletes over the two-day competition in Cambridge, Mass.
The Orange continues its fall schedule next weekend, on Sunday Oct. 28 at the Princeton Chase in Princeton, N.J.
