Carrie-Mattimoe Nets Two in Loss to UNH

SYRACUSE, N.Y.- Despite senior forward Holly Carrie-Mattimoe's three-point performance, the Orange lost to New Hampshire, 3-4, in its season opener. Carrie-Mattimoe notched two goals and one assist against the Wildcats, while Caitlin Roach also added a goal and an assist.
New Hampshire was the first to get on the board after Sara Carlson scored five minutes after puck drop. Kailey Chappell found Carlson on the right side and the forward was able to sneak the puck past Jenesica Drinkwater to put the Wildcats up, 1-0.
Kayla Monk was called for tripping less than a minute later, giving Syracuse its first power play of the season. The Orange was able to capitalize on the man-advantage, when Carrie-Mattimoe netted her first of the game off of an assist from Roach.
A minute into the second frame, Shiann Darkangelo took a shot which was saved by Vilma Vattovaara. Freshman Laurie Kingsbury came in off the bench and was able to put the puck back on net. It was Carrie-Mattimoe who picked up the rebound this time and found the back of the net for her second goal of the evening.
UNH's Lauren Kirwin tied the game up at 2-2 a minute later. Kirwin found the puck during a scrum in front of the net and recorded her first goal of the season. The Wildcats scored again when Jessica Hitchcock received the puck from Sara Carlson and tallied the third goal for UNH.
It was then Roach's turn to even up the score. The junior defenseman picked up a rebound off of Carrie-Mattimoe's shot at 7:33 in the second to tie it at 3-3. It was Roach's third goal of her career.
Both teams would go scoreless for the remainder of the game until UNH's Kristina Lavoie scored the power-play game-winner with 1:30 left.
Drinkwater tallied 16 saves in the game while the Orange outshot the Wildcats, 38-20.
The Orange returns to the ice tomorrow at 4 p.m. when it hosts Northeastern at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
