The Syracuse ice hockey team lost its game to No. 10 Northeastern, 5-2, at home today. Sophomore defenseman Kallie Goodnough and freshman Laurie Kingsbury tallied the two goals for the Orange (0-2-0). Goaltender Jenesica Drinkwater registered 20 saves against the Wildcats.
"We learned a lot about ourselves tonight," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "It would have been very easy to say, it's not our night. Let's look ahead or let's get through this game. I'm very proud of them. I know it sounds funny because we just got beat 5-2. I really feel that we have something here. This group stuck together."
Northeastern's Kendall Coyne took advantage of an SU penalty and scored the first goal for NU at 3:05 into the game. Coyne shot the puck across the net into the opposite corner. It was then Northeastern's Brittany Esposito's turn to score. Esposito found the rebound off of Rachel Llanes initial shot and put it away to put the Huskies up 4-0.
Around halfway through the first period, there was a scrum in front of the Huskie's net and SU was awarded a penalty shot. Senior forward Holly Carrie-Mattimoe took the shot for the Orange, but the puck went wide of the cage.
The Huskies would add two more goals before the end of the period including one from Casey Pickett and a power play tally from Llanes.
The Syracuse took over the offensive attack in the second period, out shooting the Huskies, 18-4. At 6:04 into the second frame, Goodnough received the puck near the left circle from Allie LaCombe and fired in the puck for her first goal of the season to put the score at 4-1.
Tori Hickey added a power play tally in the beginning of the third for the Huskies.
The Orange weren't finished just yet. With four minutes left in the game, redshirt freshman Laurie Kingsbury scored her first goal of her collegiate career. The two assists on her tally were from fellow freshmen Danielle Leslie and Melissa Piacentini. Both of their assists were the first points of their career. Kingsbury recorded an assist in last night's contest.
The Orange went 0-for-5 on the power play but the penalty killing unit stopped two back-to-back 5-on-3 situations.
