The #9 Syracuse Orange (1-0) opened the 2013 season with a 62-49 victory against #20 San Diego State (0-1) in the "Battle On The Midway" in San Diego.
The game was conducted on the deck of the retired aircraft carrier USS Midway.
"I'm happy we were here. I'm proud we were here," said SU coach Jim Boeheim "I'm
proud to be on the Midway. It's a great story, and the fans were great.
"I'm proud of my team because obviously it's tough to make shots."
It was the 37th season opener at the Syracuse helm for Boeheim and the Hall of Fame coach guided the Orange to the 891st victory of his career. His record in campaign beginners improved to 34-3.
Three players scored in double-digits for the Orange and seven different players found the scoring column in the eighth consecutirve season-opener victory for SU, dating back to the 2004-05 season.
Junior C.J. Fair and sophomore Michael Carter-Williams led the offense with 17 points apiece, while Fair registered a team-high 10 rebounds. Carter-Williams total represented a career-best effort. Senior Brandon Triche recorded 15 points and three steals.
Beyond the pomp and circumstance of an outdoor game on an iconic ship, it was a game where the elements affected play. A sun-filled sky and a light breeze made shooting a challenge.
Fair opened the scoring for the SU with a pair of free throw shots to even the score at 2-2. The Orange settled into an offensive rhythm, responding with a 17-2 run to extend their lead to 15 points at the eleven minute mark. Fair led the team during the offensive strike with seven points.
SU took a 14 point lead with 6:18 remaining in the half, their largest of the frame. SU played with a double-digit lead for the remainder of the half and entered the intermission leading the Aztecs, 33-19.
The Orange zone, combined with the outdoor scene, combined to limit San Diego State to 7-of-29 from the field (.241). The Aztecs converted just 5-of-17 first-half free throws (.294).Â
Following the break, SU continued to command a double-digit advantage. The Orange took its largest lead of the game at 54-37, after a free throw by Triche. The margin never dipped below double-digits the rest of the game.
Triche took over the scoring in the second half, logging 11 points and two rebounds. Junior Baye Moussa Keita led the Orange with five rebounds in the final frame.
Syracuse did not relinquish the lead as time expired, as the Orange earned their first win of the season in a 62-49 victory over San Diego State.
Jamaal Franklin led the Aztec's offense with 11 points, eight rebounds and three steals.
